5th meeting of the Discussion club

On June 5, 2025, the 5th meeting of the Discussion Club on the topic "Fungicidal Protection of Potatoes" took place. The meeting was traditionally held in a mixed format: in person at the Potato Institute and online.

The following persons had the welcoming speech: Executive Director of UAPP - Olga Samoilichenko, President of UAPP - Thomas Carpenter, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the Potato Institute - Tetyana Oliynyk.

During the first part, leading farms shared their own cases of fungicidal protection: a representative of Continental Farmers Group presented the technology of fungicidal protection of potatoes of the agricultural holding, showed how the technology changes during the mass spread of late blight and alternariosis. During the speech, it was emphasized that in recent years the company has been paying special attention to anthracnose, the main methods of combating it are considered by the agricultural holding to be high-quality seed material, phytosanitary cleaning, laboratory tests and the correct choice of fungicide.

Igor Motko, agronomist of Agrico Ukraine LLC, presented the meeting participants with a system of fungicide protection of potatoes in accordance with the Syngenta protocol. The representative of SFG Eldorado told how the farm avoids resistance to individual drugs, which problematic moments have arisen in recent years. He also demonstrated the general scheme of fungicide protection and the features of the farm scheme.

The representative of the Potato Institute spoke about diseases caused by bacterial and fungal ethology, listed the spectrum of action of fungicides (active substances and objects against which treatment is carried out), the spectrum of action of fungicides against potato diseases, and the scheme of fungicidal protection of potato plantings at the Potato Institute from 2020 to the present.

The representative of BASF LLC spoke in detail about potato anthracnose (Colletotrichum coccodes): relevance, features of development, and control methods. "Only an integrated approach will ensure sustainable containment of the development and spread of potato anthracnose."

Representatives of chemical companies ADAMA, BASF, and BAYER gave answers to the questions:

  • What is the plant phase to start preventive treatments against late blight and alternariosis
  • How to achieve a reduction in the cost of fungicide protection by balancing the interval between treatments and the risks of disease developmen
  • How to stop epiphytotia of late blight and alternariosi
  • Fighting bacteriosis (erwinia and dickea) in conditions of excessive moisture
  • Fighting fusarium during the period of crop formation

Viktor Riznyk (agricultural consultant, Agrico Ukraine LLC and RVO project) shared the experience of Dutch farmers; namely, he told about the schemes of fungicide protection of ware and seed potatoes using the example of a Dutch farm. The schemes of fungicide protection were provided by Olaf van Campen, agricultural consultant of the Agrico, a farmer who grows commercial and seed potatoes. In the European Union countries, there are bans on certain existing substances, and in the presentation by Olaf van Campen, the meeting participants were introduced to both the preparations and the active substances during each treatment.
